Biggest Medieval Wall Tour
Journey with us to southern France, and step into a fairytale world of kings, queens, knights, and fair maidens. Imagine knights dueling within the city walls. Picture artisans and craftsmen hard at work and merchants busily trading goods.
This is La Cité Médiévale de Carcassonne. It is an impressive, magnificent medieval fortified city on top of a hill. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Carcassonne has a fascinating history of over 2,000 years. Like most fairytales, it has a happy ending.
La Cité is Europe’s largest and best-preserved medieval fortress. The wall is 3 km. Long and consists of an inner and an outer wall. See if you can count the 52 towers and barbicans along the walls.
Within its walls, you can wander along the narrow, cobbled streets and the shops that line it. You might be surprised to learn that there are families who live in the town!
The main attraction within the walls is the Château Comtal (the Count’s Castle). Like the city, a moat surrounds the castle. Marvel at its architecture that bears witness to the different eras it lived through.
The city has a delightful legend of how it got its name. In reality, the Romans who fortified the town named it Julia Carsaco. This later evolved into Carcassonne. Be sure to ask our friendly tour guide to tell you the fun legend!
You will learn a lot about medieval history during our visit to Carcassonne. Be sure to get your camera ready with plenty of available memory. You will surely snap photo after photo to memorialize your trip to this fairytale town!
Fun Fact: “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” was filmed there!
